Odisha boy Amrutjay Mohanty bagged his maiden all-India singles title by emerging champion in the AITA-OTA Championship Series Under-12 Tennis Tournament at Union Club here today. Second seed Amrutjay achieved the biggest success of his career, outplaying top seed Hasith Srujan Gummuluru of Andhra Pradesh in the final 6-1, 6-3.
A Standard-VI student of St Xavier’s High School, Kedar Gouri (Bhubaneswar), Amrutjay, however, missed a double crown as he lost in the doubles final. AP duo of Gummuluru and Dhruv Advaith K fought back from a set down to beat Amrutjay and his statemate Abhishek Mohapatra 1-4, 4-1, 7-2.
Singles title winner and runner-up gained 15 and 10 AITA ranking points respectively. Altogether 20 boys from four states are participating in the tournament. Southern Range Police DIG Amitav Thakur gave away the prizes in presence of host Ganjam District Tennis Association secretary Ranjit Panda, tournament director Arjun Swain and tournament referee Jatin Batsya.
